BSL Interlenguas Learning Resources

Any exposure you can get to your targeted language is useful.

Many people would like to come on one of our intensive courses. They are not for everybody.

Many of our clients are fortunate in that employers recognize the value of our training both to their employee and also to the employing company.

Many people are not prepared to make the necessary investment but would still prefer to become proficient in a language.

This still takes time and effort. It also takes a little imagination and perserverence.

If you are serious about taking your ambition to master a language this may also take a little imagination.

You should try to embroider your learning of the language into your lifestyle. You should also seek out every opportunity of using the language-best still by visiting the country.

CD BASED COURSES AND SOFTWARE

Most clients have bought one or more CD or tape based courses. indeed in most houses you will find one or more of these courses abandoned.

Perhaps the best known are the Liguaphone brand and latterly the "Michel Thomas"-made famous by providing intensive one to one courses with the great and the good.

Presumably the late Mr Thomas did not claim that his CD courses were an adequate substitute for the one-to-one language training he provided.

Because the CD based language course is often discarded and hopefully is reasonably hardy-if your budget is tight it might make sense to buy one of these courses second-hand through an on-line retailer such as amazon or ebay.

Watch DVDs, Read magazines and books

Simply relying on a language course will probably not be sufficiently motivating for you. You will also need to watch films, read books and newspapers, and if you can watch/listen foreign language news programmes.

Apart from buying foreign language films there are now internet based DVD loan companies that have good libraries of foreign language films. This is especially useful if you are based some distance from a DVD store.

Once you have signed up for the service you can plan a series of foreign films that you can see.

Sponsor a child in the country of your targeted language

There are a number of charities that provide the opportunity to sponsor a child from the developing countries.

Perhaps a street orphan from Peru or a child in a francophone country of Africa.

You engage in correspondence with child and you can do so in your trageted language. This is a real incentive to keep going with the language.

Visit the country and go with a purpose

Try to visit the country itself regularly. Especially off season flights are available from many local airports to Spain, Italy and France and the budget carriers often fly to these countries from airports on your doorstep.

Carriers such as Thomsonfly and TUI are often less obvious but competitive to the easyjets and Ryanairs.
